When Your Family Portrait Session Turns Into a Football Game
As much as I love beautiful portraits, gorgeous light, and perfectly coordinated outfits, sometimes the most memorable part of a family session happens when nobody is posing at all.
This Oatlands family portrait session was filled with meaningful moments from the start. I asked that each family member bring something they love to do to the session and photographed them with items that reflected their hobbies, interests, and personalities. From books and artwork to footballs and handmade creations, every portrait told a little piece of their story.
The Best Photos Often Happen Between the Photos
After we finished the formal portraits and family groupings, an impromptu football game began.
Within minutes, siblings were laughing, strategizing, and everyone forgot there was a camera nearby.
Those are the moments I live for.
The smiles become genuine.
The laughter becomes contagious.
The interactions become real.
Suddenly, nobody is wondering what to do with their hands or whether they’re standing the right way. They’re simply enjoying each other.
And that’s where the magic happens.
Why I Love Adding Movement to Family Portrait Sessions
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that everyone needs to stand still and smile at the camera for an hour.
Not true.
In fact, some of my favorite images happen in the in-between moments. When families are moving, playing, exploring, or simply interacting naturally.
For younger children, bubbles or games help keep their attention and energy positive.
For teenagers, activities take the pressure off and allow their personalities to shine.
For parents, it’s a chance to relax and enjoy time with their family instead of worrying about whether everyone is cooperating.
The result is a gallery filled with authentic expressions rather than forced smiles.
Oatlands Was the Perfect Backdrop
The beautiful grounds at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens provided the perfect setting for both classic portraits and playful moments.
We started with tree-lined paths, gardens, and personalized portraits. The contrast between elegant portraits and spontaneous play made this gallery even more meaningful.
Because families aren’t just posed portraits.
They’re relationships.
They’re inside jokes.
They’re laughter.
They’re competition.
They’re joy.
And sometimes they’re a family football game during their portrait session.
Whether it’s football, tag, piggyback rides, dancing, racing down a path, or simply exploring together, incorporating movement often creates the images families treasure most years later. Because while everyone loves a beautiful portrait for the wall, it’s often the unexpected moments that tell your story and become favorites.
