There is something incredibly magical about a winter proposal — especially when it takes place on the ice at Reston Town Center.
Garrett reached out wanting to plan a truly unforgettable surprise for Ryleigh, and from the very beginning, he was thoughtful about every detail. I arrived early to walk around the rink, study the light, and choose the best angle so I could clearly capture Ryleigh’s face during the proposal. I even sent Garrett a photo of the scene with little stick figures drawn in to demonstrate exactly where he should stand and how to position himself so the moment would unfold beautifully on camera.
Then it was time to hide.
I tucked myself behind one of the fire pits near the rink, camera ready, heart pounding right along with his. After shopping and dinner at North Italia, they skated onto the ice, I had no idea what to expect in terms of their skating skills. As soon as I saw Ryleigh holding onto the railing, I knew she might need a little extra support afterward — and I quickly adjusted my portrait plan.
Garrett had rented the entire ice skating pavilion, so they were the only two on the ice. It was quiet, romantic, and filled with anticipation.
When he dropped to one knee, Ryleigh was completely surprised. She didn’t notice me at all — which was amazing — allowing me to capture every genuine reaction as it unfolded naturally. When Garrett told her I was there, she turned, saw me, and broke into the biggest, most joyful smile. It was such a sweet moment.
After the proposal, I guided them through portraits that felt both romantic and comfortable. We did some standing poses, but I also had them sit on the ice for a few shots so Ryleigh could relax and feel secure. The result? Authentic laughter, cozy moments, and images that feel just as magical as the night itself.
Winter proposals at Reston Town Center truly have a charm all their own — twinkle lights, crisp air, and a once-in-a-lifetime “yes” on the ice.
