Valencia, Spain: A Family Adventure

Why Valencia, Spain is the Ultimate Family-Friendly Vacation Destination for Moms and Kids Alike

As a Northern Virginia photographer and proud mom, I’m always on the hunt for the perfect travel destination — one that blends stunning scenery, rich history, and kid-friendly fun. Let me tell you, Valencia, Spain checked every single box! ✨

Traveling with my 12-year-old daughter, we discovered a sun-drenched city full of color, culture, and — yes — plenty of Coke and gelato to keep the smiles bright and energy flowing.

Whether you’re a fellow photographer looking for incredible backdrops or a busy parent searching for your next memorable family getaway, Valencia deserves a spot on your list. Here’s how we spent our magical days in this Mediterranean gem.

✨ Where We Stayed: Hotel Cosmo Valencia

When it comes to lodging, I always say: location is everything. Hotel Cosmo placed us right in the heart of historic Valencia Old Town — just steps from the Mercado Central, Plaza de la Reina, and the Valencia Cathedral.

The rooms were modern, bright, and family-friendly, but what truly won us over? The staff. They went above and beyond, giving us insider tips on where to eat, what to see, and even sharing hidden spots only locals know about. 💛

🐱 A Hidden Gem: La Casa de los Gatos (House of Cats)

Tucked in the artsy El Carmen neighborhood lies one of the most whimsical little finds I’ve ever stumbled across: La Casa de los Gatos (the House of Cats). This miniature “home” for stray cats is nestled along the street — blink and you might miss it!

As a photographer, these quirky, soulful places are the ones I live for. They tell quiet stories and capture the spirit of a city in the most unexpected ways.

🎨 Awe and Art: St. Nicholas Church (Sistine Chapel of Valencia)

Even if your kids don’t usually jump for joy at the mention of churches, St. Nicholas Church is different. Known as the “Sistine Chapel of Valencia,” its fresco-covered ceilings will have everyone staring in awe.

It’s a blend of Baroque drama and Gothic history, and I couldn’t help but snap dozens of photos under that painted sky.

🍽 Smart Travel Tip: Eat Where You Explore

One thing that made our trip smoother? Planning lunch and dinner before heading out. I’d search for top-rated restaurants near our attractions, avoiding tourist traps and “hangry” meltdowns.

Near the cathedral, we found a tiny café with delicious acai bowls — and of course, a cold Coke and creamy gelato for the win. 🍧

🥘 Taste of Valencia: La Pepica

No trip to Valencia is complete without authentic paella, and La Pepica is as iconic as it gets. Located by the Playa de la Malvarrosa, this historic restaurant has hosted celebrities and royalty — and now, me and my daughter!

We split a massive pan of traditional Paella de Valencia (chicken and rabbit — all the good stuff!) while soaking up beachside breezes. And don’t skip the Agua de Valencia — a zesty, bubbly cocktail made with local oranges, cava and a shot of vodka.

🐠🐘 Family Favorites: Oceanogràfic & Bioparc Valencia

Let’s be real — while I could spend days photographing stunning churches and charming side streets, my daughter had other plans!

We spent a day at Oceanogràfic, Europe’s largest aquarium, and it was a huge hit. Think sharks, dolphins, and an underwater tunnel that will leave everyone wide-eyed.

Then we explored Bioparc Valencia, a next-level zoo experience where animals roam realistic savanna-like habitats. My daughter said it beat “walking around looking at old buildings”  😉

📷 Why Valencia Stole My Photographer’s Heart

Between the historic architecture, hidden murals, beach views, and the lively local culture, Valencia is a photographer’s dream. Every corner held a new surprise — and traveling with my daughter reminded me to see it all through the lens of wonder and joy.

Whether you’re sipping a cold drink under the Spanish sun or chasing gelato smiles through cobblestone streets, Valencia will steal your heart — just like it did ours. 💛
